Welcome
to Los Mestizos De San Jose!
In the summer of 1973, several families who
in the past had taken adult lessons in Folklorico Dance
realized that they had shared a common philosophy.
The need to assure that children were taught the
traditional dances of Mexico. Only by teaching our
youth, the beauty and history of the traditional
dances can we assure that the art form will continue
and prosper in future generations. No groups existed
at that time dedicated to instructing children, so
these families together created "LOS MESTIZOS
de SAN JOSE". The founding members were from
the families Castro, Gutierrez, Rocha, Rodriquez,
and Carrasco. Los Mestizos has been responsible for
teaching thousands of children over those 32 years
many of which have continued throughout their adult
lives as dancers, directors and teachers.
Los Mestizos de San Jose has participated in the
Danzantes Unidos Festival since its inception in
1979. They have ranked amongst the top groups in
the company of over 1200 participants. Los Mestizos
have participated in workshops with the DUF and
ANGF for over 20 years, in cities such as Fresno,
San Diego, and Salinas. They have also had the
opportunity of participating in workshops with
master folklorico instructors in the origins of
folklorico dance in Guadalajara and Oaxaca, Mexico.
